The Association of German Average Adjusters

The Association of German Average Adjusters (Verein Deutscher Dispacheure – VDD) is the joint association of all sworn German average adjusters. In Germany average adjusters are publicly appointed and sworn in by the local Chamber of Commerce after they have successfully proven their professional expertise in the fields of General Average, Particular Average, Third Party liability, Loss of Hire and other areas of marine insurance. A German average adjuster is bound to act as an impartial umpire between the different parties involved in the various types of claims like shipowners, insurers, brokers, cargo interests etc.

History

The Association of German Average Adjusters was founded in 1922 as a forum for the German average adjusters to discuss general matters of marine insurance and general average. The founders were very dedicated to influence international developments in marine insurance and in the York-Antwerp Rules (YAR). Already at that time the members of the Association of German Average Adjusters were an active part of the international maritime community.

The current members have carried the founders’ spirit into modern times. Some are also members of the Association Mondiale de Dispacheurs (AMD) and have provided input for the latest revision of the York-Antwerp Rules. Members of the VDD are still active in various working groups of AMD and Comité Maritime International (CMI).

PURPOSE OF THE ASSOCIATION

As per the statutes of the association the German Sworn Average Adjusters have organized themselves in the VDD to

a. preserve the interests of their profession;
b. promote unified adjusting and application of law of the rules for general and particular average;
c. foster the construction and development of the law of general average and maritime insurance.

The members hold regular meetings to discuss matters of general interest to the profession, to report current market developments and consult over proposals to promote the goals of the association.

COMPLIANCE

The members of the VDD in their capacity as officially sworn average adjusters are already bound by law to act independently and impartially. To emphasize this position most of the members have entered into a self-commitment to establish procedures to strengthen the impartial and independent position. Violations against this self-commitment can be reported here - PRO HONORE e.V.

For interested parties a copy of the self-commitment including the list of members which signed the agreement can be found here - compliance declaration
